Established in 1908, Martignetti Companies is the leading distributor of wines, spirits and beer in New England and the sixth largest wine and spirits distributor in the country. Based in Taunton, Massachusetts, the company currently operates in six New England states, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont and Rhode Island catering to the need of restaurants and retail customers. Established in 1908, Martignetti Companies originated as a family-owned grocery business in Boston's North End. With the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the Martignetti family secured Massachusetts' inaugural beverage alcohol retail license, marking the beginning of a venture that would evolve over the years.
In the 1970s, the family expanded into distribution and wholesale, with a particular focus on fine wines. Through a combination of organic growth, strategic supplier portfolio additions, and successful acquisitions, the distribution arm of Martignetti Companies thrived. Today, the Martignetti portfolio boasts the most extensive selection of fine wines, spirits and beer, ranging from unique artisanal producers to globally recognized leaders.
Now under its third generation of family ownership, Martignetti Companies remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing long-term partnerships with customers and suppliers. This commitment is reflected in ongoing investments in personnel, skills, and technologies, ensuring the delivery of the highest quality service and brand-building capabilities.
1908 – Grocery Business established by the Martignetti family in Boston’s North End
1933 – Repeal of Prohibition, issuance of 1st alcohol retail license in the city of Boston to Martignetti Grocery, and the formation of the Martignetti (Carolina) distribution/wholesale company
1986 – Carmine and Carl Martignetti assume control of the family business
1991 – 2015 – Acquired Chas Gilman & Sons, Pastene Wine Company, Jet Wine & Spirits (New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont), Silenus Wine Company, Classic Wine Imports, and United Liquors
2008 – Formed partnership with the Mancini family - Rhode Island Distributing
2009 – Acquired Commonwealth Wine & Spirits, bringing the E&J Gallo portfolio and other select fine wines and spirits to the company
2016 – Constructed a State-of-the-Art, LEED Certified Martignetti Companies Headquarters in Taunton, MA, consolidating all Massachusetts office, sales, and warehouse personnel into one location
2017 – After 84 years in the retail business, a strategic decision was made to close the final Martignetti store, to focus solely on meeting the needs of retail and restaurant customers through our distribution services
2023 – Martignetti Exchange launched providing retail and restaurant customers throughout Massachusetts the ability to order all Martignetti products online, from anywhere, at any time that is convenient for our customers.
2023 – Acquired Connecticut distributor, Hartley & Paker, bringing Martignetti Companies’ distribution into all six New England states, and Quality Beverage in Taunton, MA.
